The Doha Metro is a practical airport-to-city option when your flight arrives during operating hours. Hamad International Airport Terminal 1 is on the Red Line, with direct trains to Msheireb and West Bay Qatar Energy. Change at Msheireb for the Gold or Green Line.

The airport-to-city route

  1. After immigration and baggage claim, follow the airport signs to the Metro.
  2. At Hamad International Airport Terminal 1 station, buy and top up a standard travel card at a vending machine.
  3. Check the platform display for a Red Line train heading into central Doha.
  4. Stay aboard for Msheireb or West Bay Qatar Energy, or change at Msheireb for another line.
  5. Tap the card at both the entry and exit gates.

Qatar Tourism’s network guide confirms that the Terminal 1 station connects to the city centre on the Red Line. It identifies Msheireb as the interchange for all three Metro lines: Red, Green and Gold (Visit Qatar).

Tickets and fares

For an ordinary airport journey, buy a standard travel card from a station vending machine. Qatar Tourism says standard is one of the Metro’s two travel classes, alongside Goldclub, and that standard encompasses standard and family carriages. Observe the signs and eligibility rules on the platform rather than entering a carriage based on class name alone.

The published maximum standard travel charge is QAR 6 in a day. A first-time card purchase may add a separate card cost, so check the total shown by the machine rather than assuming QAR 6 covers everything. Keep the card until you have tapped out at your destination.

Children under five travel free; children aged five and above pay the adult fare. Qatar Tourism also confirms that passengers must tap in and out (Visit Qatar).

Published operating hours

The published network timetable is:

  • Saturday to Thursday: 5am–1am
  • Friday: 9am–1am

These hours took effect on 1 January 2025, according to a Qatar Rail announcement carried by the Qatar News Agency.

Do not treat the network closing time as the last guaranteed departure from the airport. Check the Doha Metro app or Qatar Rail’s current information for the final usable journey from Terminal 1. Qatar Tourism notes that hours may be extended or reduced for special events and seasonal occasions (Visit Qatar).

For a late arrival, allow time for immigration, baggage collection, the walk to the station and buying a card. If the margin is tight—or if you arrive before the Metro opens at 9am on Friday—a taxi is the more reliable plan.

Transfers for useful Doha stops

Msheireb: no change

Stay on the Red Line to Msheireb. This is the central interchange and a useful station for accommodation in and around Msheireb Downtown Doha.

West Bay: no change

Stay on the Red Line to West Bay Qatar Energy. Check the walk from the station to your hotel before choosing the Metro: West Bay covers a broad area, and the final walk can be uncomfortable with luggage or in hot weather.

Souq Waqif and the National Museum: change at Msheireb

At Msheireb, follow signs for the Gold Line toward Ras Bu Aboud:

  • Leave at Souq Waqif for the souq area.
  • Continue to National Museum for the National Museum of Qatar.

Qatar Tourism’s line guide places both stops on the Gold Line, while the airport is on the Red Line (Visit Qatar).

Education City and Qatar National Library: change at Msheireb

Change from Red to Green at Msheireb for Hamad Hospital, Education City, Qatar National Library and Al Riffa Mall of Qatar. Al Bidda also connects the Red and Green lines, but using Msheireb keeps the airport transfer rule simple: it is the interchange for every Metro line.

Katara and Qatar University: no change

Stay on the Red Line for Katara, Qatar University and other stations north of central Doha. For the Lusail Tram, Qatar Tourism lists connections at Legtaifiya and Lusail (Visit Qatar).

When a taxi makes more sense

Choose the Metro when your destination is near a station, you are comfortably within service hours and you can manage your luggage through the gates and any transfer. Qatar Tourism says trains generally arrive every six minutes, though live waits can vary (Visit Qatar).

A taxi is usually the better fit when the hotel is far from a station, the group has several large bags, a transfer would be difficult, or the flight lands close to the end of service. Before leaving arrivals, check the live Metro hours, the station nearest your accommodation and the walking route from that station—especially if the address is simply described as “West Bay.”
